Stephen Baker and Leonard Marshall spent time reminiscing and signing autographs with Veterans from the Spinal Cord Injuries and Disease (SCI/D) department.
“On behalf of the Giants and my teammate, Leonard Marshall, it is our honor to be here with you”, said Stephen Baker “The Touchdown Maker”, former New York Giants wide receiver. “I want to thank you for your service. You are not forgotten.”
This annual event was organized by the JJP VAMC Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE). Events like these have been noted to positively influence patient rehabilitation. Many SCI/D patients have restricted movement and are confined to their beds. Celebrity visits enhance morale and otherwise brighten veterans’ days and stay here.
The event was held virtually during the last two years due to COVID protocols. This is the first physical visit since the pandemic began. The NY Giants have adopted JJP VAMC as an important place to visit during veteran’s month.
“In 2018 the NY Giants contacted us inquiring how they can show their appreciation to our veterans during our Veteran’s month,” said Shawn Kingston, Chief of the CDCE, “we agreed to have a few players visit the facility, sign a few autographs, and meaningfully interact with our vets.”
The CDCE has maintained partnerships with thousands of organizations for over 75 years to supplement care and service to VA. These partnerships have always been launched to meet needs, fill gaps, and solve critical issues for Veterans. As more organizations are involved in strategic partnerships across the VA, the CDCE continues to encourage new partnerships. Additionally, the CDCE continues to remain intricately involved in the day-to-day execution of the programs and activities of America’s Veterans and the VA overall.
“To be able to do this…to spend quality time with you, is great,” said Leonard Marshall, former New York Giants defensive lineman. “Especially for what you did for our country.”
