New Year – New You
The challenge of weight loss after the holidays.
Holiday time is the time of the year when we indulge in the tradition of eating, drinking and being merry! But after the holiday season ends the challenge of losing that holiday cheer around our waistline begins.
The following are a few tips for the New Year to successfully manage your weight:
- Make lifestyle changes you can maintain, set yourself up for the future.
- Set goals that you can reach, one goal at a time.
- Eat wisely to cut extra calories. For example, leaving cheese off your sandwich everyday can save you 700 calories in a week.
- Keep a daily record of what you eat and your physical activity, it can help you see just how many calories you are eating and burning.
- Weigh yourself at least weekly at the same time of day, using the same scales and wearing the same weight of clothing.
- Ask your family and friends for support, better yet, ask them to join you in a daily walk or other form of exercise and become your accountability partner.
- Celebrate your success! Consider non-food rewards.
If you are a Veteran, join the MOVE! Weight Management Program at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center. The MOVE! Weight Program is a lifestyle wellness program to help Veterans with weight loss to improve their health.
The program focuses on individual plans tailored to each participant providing information on nutrition, physical activity and changing habits to healthy habits.
VA offers small in person groups and individual appointments. Video face-to-face appointments and telephone appointments are also available options. VA has appointment times to accommodate even the busiest of schedules.
The MOVE! Program has many success stories, below is Stanley’s story.
Stanley started the MOVE! Program in December 2017. “It took me a while to make up my mind to do what I needed to lose weight,” said Stanley. “Because the MOVE! Program staff did not give up on me, I have lost 129 pounds in 2 years and 6 months. I started to lose weight and never looked back.” Stanley was only able to take 413 steps a day when he started the MOVE! Program and now he averages 11,000 steps per day along with modified crunches and wall pushups. Stanley is now able to push mow his lawn.
Another tool that has helped Stanley with weight loss was keeping a food and physical activity log. Once he started keeping the log, Stanley was surprised at how much he was eating and made the decision to change his eating habits. “With 58 pounds left to lose, my MOVE! Dietitian invited outpatient Dietitian/Nutritionist Jennifer Glasbrenner to join my weight management team,” said Stanley. “Thru the changes I have made, I have also improved my blood pressure and blood sugars.”
