John L. Stelsel is Assistant Director for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Southern Nevada Healthcare System. In this role, he provides executive oversight of operations and strategic direction for six community VA clinics, located in Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump and Laughlin; Environmental Management and Prosthetics services, and the facility’s Privacy and Freedom of Information Act programs. Consisting of a medical center, six community VA clinics, a Community Resource and Referral Center; a Veterans Recovery Center; and inpatient residential rehabilitation treatment program; VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System provides delivery of health care to more than 70,000 unique Veterans annually and ensures outpatient and inpatient services are available to more than 146,700 Veterans residing in an official catchment area of Clark, Lincoln and Nye counties.
Mr. Stelsel began his VA career in 1992 as an Textile Care Manager Intern at the William S. Middleton VAMC in Madison, Wisc., and served in various administrative leadership positions of increasing responsibility at eight VA facilities across the country. He joined VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System in July 2011 as Chief of Environmental Management Service and was appointed to his current role in September 2012.
Throughout his career, Mr. Stelsel has provided supervision and oversight for a broad range of healthcare administrative functions, and, as a member of the Senior Executive Leadership Team, he is directly involved in the day-to-day operations of VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System. He has served as the facility’s Acting Associate Director on several occasions; and in 2021, was detailed as Acting Associate Director of the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System.
Mr. Stelsel holds a both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in occupational safety from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is also a graduate of several leadership programs including VA’s Health Care Leadership Institute (HCLI) and is a Fellow-Level Mentor in the national mentor certification program.
