Volunteer or Donate

VA Northern Indiana Health Care System depends on the goodwill of our benefactors and volunteers who wish to give something back to America's heroes.

Volunteering

Volunteers provide many important functions throughout both Medical Centers and help make our patients' stay more enjoyable. Volunteers can perform a number of services, and a volunteer's talents are closely matched with one of our many assignments.

To volunteer, call or visit the Center for Development and Civic Engagement Department (CDCE) Department. For the Marion office calls (765) 677-3114 and for the Fort Wayne office, call (260) 460-1435.  We will be happy to receive your application or discuss how you can help us in our mission to provide comfort and care to America's Veterans.

Volunteer Assignments

We've listed some of the ways you can volunteer below. However, if you have special skills to offer, please call us so we can discuss how you can best use your talents to help our patients. 

Volunteer Van Drivers

Help pick-up outpatients receiving chemotherapy, dialysis, radiation therapy, and other outpatient appointments. To fill this role, you must have a current drivers license and automobile insurance and pass a physical exam.

Information Desk Volunteer

Help patients and visitors with information and clinic locations.

Volunteer Office Assistant

Help different medical or administrative offices in the medical center. Duties include filing, answering phones, and greeting and directing patients.

Pharmacy Assistant

Help the pharmacy with prescription mailouts and pharmacy deliveries to units.

Volunteer Patient Reminder Caller

Help make phone calls to remind patients about their scheduled appointments.

Patient Escort Volunteers

Provide assistance with pushing patients in wheelchairs to their scheduled appointments.

Mail Room Assistant

Complete mail room projects and deliver mail to medical center departments.

Student Volunteers

VA Northern Indiana Health Care System accepts volunteers from 14 years old up.  Student volunteers (14-18 years old) can participate in the Sumer Student Volunteer Program, an 8-week program designed especially for Summer Students.

Student volunteers are welcome and encouraged to continue volunteering during the school year and move up to regular volunteer post-graduation.

Student volunteers may also be eligible for national scholarships.

Make a donation

Donations from people like you help us provide more services to our Veterans. We accept cash donations as well as physical items our Veterans need. You can donate online, by mail, or in person. All donations are tax-deductible. Please contact your local Center for Development and Civic Engagement Department (CDCE) Office to arrange to drop off any large items.

The service provides a quick, safe way for you to pledge your support to Veterans online. You choose the medical center, the amount, and the voluntary program you’d like to help. And there are no extra fees to use the secure website, so every penny of your donation goes to help Veterans.

Monetary donations

Monetary donations are used for the comfort and welfare of our veteran patients, including —

  • Recreational activities
  • Hygiene products
  • Gas cards (to help pay for gas to come to appointments at VANIHCS)
  • Christmas gifts for veterans in our facilities during the holidays
Non-monetary donations

Non-monetary contributions are used to make our patients' stay more enjoyable. Items which are accepted include —

  • Magazines
  • New clothing
  • Crossword puzzle books and word search puzzle books
  • Lap robes and neck pillows

Thank you for your support

The Internal Revenue Service has announced that under the Tax Code, donations to the Department of Veterans Affairs’ General Post Fund for exclusively public purposes are deductible from federal income taxes in the manner and to the extent allowable. This announcement reflects the tax law provision which makes those donations deductible as "donations to the United States."

QOV (Quilts of Valor) Foundation*

The mission of the QOV Foundation is to cover ALL war wounded and injured servicemembers and veterans from the War on Terror whether physical or psychological wounds with Wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor (QOVS).
