Ms. Smith-Freshwater is the Chief Biomedical Engineer (Healthcare Technology Manager) for the VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6).
Ms. Smith-Freshwater began her VA career in 2009 at the Central Virginia VA Healthcare System in Richmond, Virginia. She became the Chief Biomedical Engineer at the Hampton VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia, in 2011 and has held her current position since August 2013.
Ms. Smith-Freshwater leads VISN 6’s Biomedical Engineering program and is responsible for a medical equipment portfolio of approximately $550 million, including long-term planning, direction-setting and execution to achieve program objectives. Her experience includes a proven track record of resourceful problem solving, team building and extensive managerial and project management expertise.
Ms. Smith-Freshwater earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University in 1992 and received her Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006. She is a certified clinical engineer, certified healthcare technology manager and a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
