Body text

The volunteer typically calls the Veteran weekly for 15—60 minutes to provide socialization and companionship via phone or video calls. Volunteers and Veterans are typically matched based on mutual interests and experiences. Veterans can benefit from this tele-support program if they are lonely, socially isolated or would simply like to talk to someone regularly.

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

I am a native of Jackson, MS and I am married with one fur baby. I attended the University of Southern Mississippi where I received a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiotherapy #SMTTT. I also received a master’s degree at Belhaven University in Health Administration, and I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Tell me how you came to work at the VA?

I started at the Memphis VA as an intern working in the Spinal Cord Injury unit. After college, I returned home and worked a few years at the Division of Medicaid, soon after I received an offer at the Jackson VA in the Community Care Service.

How long have you worked for VA, and what roles have you had at the VA?

I’ve worked at the VA for 5 years and have had a few different roles including working as the Executive Secretary to the Associate Director. I also worked as a Budget Technician and a Medical Support Assistant.

How does serving Veterans each day impact you personally?

It brings me joy to be able to help people, especially those who served our country. In my current role, I match volunteers with Veterans who are in need of companionship, and I love to hear the excitement in their voices when I call the Veteran to tell them they have been matched with a caller. It’s very fulfilling work knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life, simply by giving them someone to talk to every week.

What is an interesting fact that many do not know about you?

I’m a small business owner, I make and sell candles and other smell goods.

What do you do for fun?

I love to travel! My favorite locations are usually places that have a beach, but I have visited many other areas within the US. Some other places I’ve visited are Grand Turk Island, France, United Kingdom, Mexico & Jamaica.

Are you a Veteran? If so, what branch of service.

I am not a Veteran.
