His primary responsibilities as the interim chief of staff include supervising the medical staff and ensuring quality of care to include chair of the Clinical Executive Board, member of the VISN 20 Chief of Staff Committee and numerous local oversight and supervisory roles. He oversees medical services at seven facilities across 16 counties and three states to include the main Walla Walla, WA site; four community-based outpatient clinics located in Union Gap and Richland, WA; Lewiston, ID; La Grande, OR; and two primary care telehealth outreach clinics in Enterprise and Boardman, OR.
Dr. Gajewski joined the Jonathan Wainwright Memorial VA team July 2022 as the deputy associate chief of staff. Previously, he served as the medical director at the Modesto VA Clinic (Palo Alto VA Medical Center) from 2020 to 2022. At the Modesto Clinic, he was instrumental in developing COVID-19 treatment procedures and was caring for an elderly population of Veterans with advanced medical and mental health disease in an area of great poverty.
Prior to the VA, he was a professor at a number of academic medical centers from 1989 to 2020 including University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Georgetown University, Temple University and Oregon Health & Science University and is a visiting professor at several foreign medical schools.
Dr. Gajewski received a Bachelor of Arts focusing on government and pre-professional studies from the University of Notre Dame (1978) and a Doctor of Medicine from Temple University (1983). He also completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati Hospital (1986), fellowships in hematology/ oncology and bone marrow transplantation (1986-1988) and served as a third year fellowship and adjunct instructor at the UCLA Hospital and Clinics (1998-1999). He holds a number of certifications and state licenses related to his specialties. Dr. Gajewski has being named a Master by the American College of Physicians, Chapter Laureate of ACP’s Oregon Chapter and recently Fellow of the UK’s Royal College of Physicians.
