The CAVHCS PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency is an ASHP-accredited 12-month postgraduate training program beginning in July each year. Three applicants are selected through the National Matching Service (NMS) to complete the program. The program consists of 7 required rotations and 3 elective rotations, each of five weeks duration. Residents will also be required to participate in four longitudinal experiences as well as provide inpatient staffing every third weekend.

Elizabeth Brooks

Beth Brooks, Pharm.D., graduated from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy in May 2021. She is originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky and made a move to Alabama in 2017 to attend pharmacy school.  Her current professional interest is primary care, and she hopes to continue her career in VA after residency.  During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching movies, and trying new coffee shops.

Shelby Buller

Shelby Buller, Pharm.D. was born and raised in southern Minnesota before attending South Dakota State University. She completed her Bachelor of Science in pharmaceutical sciences in 2020 and her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2022. Shelby’s areas of interest include anticoagulation and inpatient psychiatry.  After this year, Shelby is considering a PGY2 in psychiatry or continuing her career working with Veterans as a clinical pharmacist.  In her free time, Shelby enjoys baking, crocheting, watching movies, reading, and finding new coffee shops to enjoy.

Abigail Switzer

Abigail Switzer, Pharm.D. received her Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences in 2018 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 2022 from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville. She is originally from Marshall, Illinois, and her current career interests include ambulatory care, academia, and infectious disease.  After completion of her PGY1 year, she hopes to continue her career with VA as an ambulatory care pharmacist with some role in academia. Outside of the pharmacy, she enjoys spending time with her puppy, fiancé, and family. She also likes traveling, listening to music, trying new foods, and being active.

Sara Tyler

Sara Tyler, Pharm.D. grew up just north of Montgomery in Wetumpka, Alabama. She completed her Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences at Troy University and graduated from Auburn University with her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2022. Her current clinical interest is ambulatory care with an emphasis in diabetes and cardiology. Some of Sara’s hobbies include reading, hiking, traveling, and finding new restaurants.

Leah Winchester

Leah Winchester, Pharm.D., MBA, received her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at The University of Arkansas, Master of Business Administration at The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and her Doctor of Pharmacy from The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her current interests are ambulatory care, management, and academia. Following her PGY1 year, she hopes to pursue additional training in an area of her interest. Her goal is to become a clinical pharmacist at the VA and work up to a leadership position. She is passionate about teaching and advancing the profession of pharmacy. Leah’s interests include listening to live music, watching movies, doing hot yoga and HIIT exercises, and spending time with her family and two pups Lima and Beans.
