Internships, fellowships and residencies

Choosing an internship, residency, or fellowship program is a big decision. The VA Oklahoma City Healthcare System offers training programs for university and postgraduate students. Let us help you develop your career as a health care professional while you serve today’s Veterans.

Nurse residency and trainee programs

Oklahoma City VA offers several programs catering to the student nurse, post graduate RN and post graduate nurse practitioner. The VA Office of Academic Affiliations  pioneered registered Nurse (RN) and nurse practitioner (NP) residency programs. Each program offers unique opportunities to develop competent, confident practice ready RNs and NPs equipped with the knowledge and skills to address the specific needs of our nation’s Veterans served by the Veterans Health Administration and community.

In 2019, the Oklahoma City VA was granted funding from the VA Office of Academic Affiliations  to establish the state’s first and only Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Residency Program. We also have the distinct honor to have the state’s only CCNE accredited transition to practice program, the RN Transition to Practice. Our Post Baccalaureate Registered Nurse Residency Program is also the state’s only CCNE accredited RN residency program.

Dr. Kathleen Parker is the director of Nurse Residency and Trainee Programs at VA Oklahoma City health care.

Current nurse practitioner residents

Precious L. Hunt Barnes, MSN, FNP-C

I am a certified Nurse Family Practitioner. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Christian University. I later obtained a Master’s in Education and completed UT Tyler’s Family Nurse Practitioners program.  My nursing career spans over 18 years as a Bedside Nurse specializing in Medical Surgical and Pulmonary/Telemetry Nursing.

I am originally from Alabama but grew up in Texas. My community was under served and a lack of healthcare and resources were very visible and prevalent. Living in this reality sparked a passion inside me to educate and mentor others with similar backgrounds. It has also driven me to reach out to communities in need by volunteering as a nurse practitioner at disadvantaged community clinics.  It is my hope to complete the OKC Nurse Practitioner Residency and to better serve those that are in need.

Dr. Ajeminayanate Berepele, DNP, FNP-C

My name is Dr. Ajeminayanate Berepele, and I go by AJ (for obvious reasons). I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Oklahoma in 2014 and then decided to go into nursing. I graduated with my Associates degree in nursing from Oklahoma City Community College in their 10-month accelerated program in 2016 and my RN to BSN from Oklahoma City University (Kramer School of Nursing) in 2017. I immediately started the BSN to DNP program at Oklahoma City University and graduated in May of 2021. My nursing background has all been in the emergency room, from April of 2016 to August of 2021. In my free time, I love playing with my German Shepherd and Golden Retriever, learning the acoustic guitar, and exercising.

Dr. Toyin Oyerinde, DNP, FNP-C

My name Dr. Toyin Oyerinde, I obtained my Doctorate degree in Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from the University of Tulsa. My bachelor’s degree in nursing was obtained from Oklahoma City University and my ADN from Oklahoma City Community College. I worked as an ICU nurse for 5 years at Select Specialty Hospital. I am married with a 5-year-old.

Yesha Patel, FNP-BC

I graduated from the University of Oklahoma with my BSN in 2017. After getting my Bachelor’s, I worked in the Neonatal ICU as a nurse where I further developed my clinical skills. With a goal of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, I received my Master’s in Nursing in 2020 from Belmont University. I am passionate about providing holistic patient-centered care that incorporates the mind, body, and soul. In my free time, I enjoy watching OU football, spending time with my family, and binge-watching TV shows.

I completed by bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2018 from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and then moved on to graduate school. I graduated from The University of Tulsa with my doctorate as a family nurse practitioner in May of 2021. I am married to my husband of 22 years and we have three children. My hobbies include serving as the clinic director for a crisis pregnancy center, music ministry with my local church, and traveling.
