Trauma can happen to anyone at any time. Whether it’s related to combat, sexual assault, or other life-threatening experiences, the human brain will not allow these memories to go unaddressed no matter how hard we try to “stuff them down” or “push them aside.”
These memories, and the emotions that go with them, will often come out in the form of anxiety, depression, or outright anger. You don’t have to suffer alone. All of our counselors are trained to help you overcome the memories and emotions associated with your traumatic event(s).
Both cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure therapy are the most researched and effectively proven treatments for addressing PTSD. Learn more about them by playing the following videos.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sometimes known as shell shock or combat stress, occurs after you experience severe trauma or a life-threatening event. Your body's defense to address a perceived threat to danger includes your fight-or-flight, which occurs when you need to defend yourself or survive the perceived danger of a threatening situation.
Here at the San Antonio Northeast Vet Center, we offer the following services
- Individual evidence-based therapy specific to PTSD
- Group support services on various days of the week, Monday through Thursday
- Psychoeducational group services that encompass topics related to PTSD, such as spousal support, anger management, assertiveness training and insomnia-related PTSD
Knoxville Vet Center - PTSD care
We offer individual and group counseling. This includes care for:
- Anger management
- Stress management
- Activity engagement
And we use evidence-based therapies such as:
- Prolonged Exposure (PE). This teaches you to gradually approach trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations that you have been avoiding since your trauma. By confronting these challenges, you can actually decrease your PTSD symptoms.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). This teaches you how to evaluate and change the upsetting thoughts you have had since your trauma. By changing your thoughts, you can change how you feel.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This helps people learn how to identify and change the destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on their behavior and emotions.
We currently have a PTSD group that meets weekly. If you're interested, please contact us at 865-633-0000.
