About menus on your VAMC site

Consistent, Veteran-centered menus
VHA Digital Media has designed the VAMC site menus to emphasize Veteran-facing services and provide a consistent navigation experience for Veterans. The majority of your site's menu has already been set up for you, and you won't need to worry about setting them for health services or news and events. Most parent menus are nationally standardized.

Flexible "About" menu items
You can select menus for some items in the "About" menu on your site. This applies only to non-standardized items that don't fall under health services or other nationally standardized menu items.

What you can and can't do
You can't adjust menus for pages under the "Services and locations" or "News and events" menus. You can adjust menus for child pages (not the parent menu links) under the "About" parent menu:

  • Internships and fellowships
  • Doing business with us
  • Programs
  • Research
  • Volunteer or donate
  • Jobs and careers

If you are unsure which parent menu to use, select Programs.

How to manage customizable parts of the VAMC menu

First ensure the relevant parent page exists before adding a page below it

1. Go to your VAMC section content.

2. Filter by the VAMC detail page content type.

3. Confirm that a published page exists for Internships and fellowships, Doing business with us, Programs, or Research.

4. If the relevant page doesn't exist or isn't published yet, create a new page or publish the existing page first.

Add a page to Internships and fellowships, Doing business with us, Programs, or Research menus

1. Open an existing VAMC Detail Page or create a new one.

2. Go to Menu settings in the right sidebar and click to expand the menu.

3. The Menu link title will automatically use the same name as the page title.

4. Use Parent item to select a menu under which you'd like the page to appear. You will only be able to select from a limited list of parent items due to nationally standardized menus.

5. Continue editing or Save your work.

6. When a new detail page is created, it will automatically get a left menu link. If you don't want the menu link to appear because you'll be linking to it from another page, contact the helpdesk to disable the menu link for you.
